Sustainable Table Logo

Sustainable Table In their own words Sustainable Table “celebrates local sustainable food, educates consumers on food-related issues and works to build community through food”. A really useful site to keep abreast of green food issues and news, and a good place to share your opinions in the forum section.

Sustainable Table celebrates local sustainable food, educates consumers on food-related issues and works to build community through food.

The program is home to the Eat Well Guide, an online directory of sustainable products in the U.S. and Canada, and the critically-acclaimed, award-winning Meatrix movies - The Meatrix, The Meatrix II: Revolting and The Meatrix II½.

Sustainable Table was created in 2003 by the nonprofit organization GRACE to help consumers understand the problems with our food supply and offer viable solutions and alternatives. Rather than be overwhelmed by the problems created by our industrial agricultural system, Sustainable Table celebrates the joy of food and eating.Sustainable Table

Today’s dominant form of agriculture relies on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, large amounts of water, major transportation systems and factory-style practices for raising livestock. Industrial farming creates over-processed, over-traveled, and under-nourishing food that may contribute to health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This type of food production causes pollution and creates environmental and public health problems that cost taxpayers both money and quality of life. Sustainable Table was launched to offer consumers a choice and to show that fresh food from small, independent family farmers is still available.

Eat Well Guide:
The first project of Sustainable Table is the Eat Well Guide, a free, online directory of sustainably-raised meat, poultry, dairy and eggs from farms, stores, restaurants, bed & breakfasts and other outlets in the United States and Canada. Consumers enter their zip or postal code to find wholesome products available locally or when traveling.

The Eat Well Guide currently hosts nearly 9,000 entries, with new outlets added daily. Users can save their favorite listings and keep notes in the online Notebook feature. And in an effort to connect consumers locally, the Guide lists local and national organizations working on sustainable food issues.

The Eat Well Guide has received numerous endorsements from media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, Consumer Reports, Health Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, and Sunset Magazine.

The Meatrix:
Produced by Sustainable Table and Free Range Studios, The Meatrix is a four-minute Flash animation that spoofs The Matrix movie trilogy while educating viewers about the problems with industrial agriculture and today’s meat supply. The film is a humorous and creative satire that uses pop culture and entertainment to educate viewers about the food they eat and where it comes from, while the web site following the film offers solutions to the problems with industrial agriculture.

The film features three superhero farm animals including Leo, the young pig who wonders if he is “the One,” Chickity, the feathered family farm defender, and Moopheus, the trench-coat-clad cow with a passion for green pastures.

When The Meatrix launched in November 2003, the viral grassroots film broke new ground in online advocacy, creating a unique vehicle in which to educate, entertain and motivate people to create change. The Meatrix has been translated into more than 30 languages and is now the most successful online advocacy film ever with over 15 million viewers worldwide.

The Meatrix has received worldwide critical acclaim and has been honored with more than a dozen major film and Web awards, including the acclaimed Webby Award, Annecy Award, Environmental Media’s best documentary short film award, among others. Due to overwhelming critical acclaim, Sustainable Table and Free Range Studios launched the sequel, The Meatrix II: Revolting, in March 2006, to explore the dark side of the industrial dairy industry. And in October 2006, in partnership with Participant Productions, The Meatrix II½ was released to help promote the Fast Food Nation movie and to show what goes on inside a processing facility.

Since its launch, thousands of DVDs have been distributed to teachers, students, parents and individuals around the world. The Meatrix has been shown at festivals, conferences, meetings, events and local gatherings.
